Here today is the second tale in S. R. Crockett’s Robert Fraser Trilogy. It’s called The Stickit Minister’s Wooing. And it has been republished by McStorytellers in association with The Galloway Raiders to mark the 125th anniversary of the publication of Crockett’s seminal short story collection, The Stickit Minister and other common men.
Enjoy. And come back here tomorrow for the final part of the trilogy. On this day 125 years ago, S. R. Crockett’s life changed forever. After more than a decade of writing, he became an overnight success! The Stickit Minister was published. To mark the anniversary, The Galloway Raiders are publishing a range of articles around their website and on social media. They’ve also given McStorytellers the opportunity to re-publish three of his short stories on our site, which we’re doing today and on Wednesday and Thursday.
So here now is the first of a trilogy of tales about the character Robert Fraser. It’s the title story in that seminal publication. Enjoy The Stickit Minister. And come back here tomorrow for the second part of the Robert Fraser Trilogy. To mark the anniversary of the death of Scotland's Forgotten Bestseller, S. R. Crockett, on this day 103 years ago, we are delighted to reproduce one of his short stories set in Europe. While on a walking tour of Normandy in the late nineteenth century, Crockett and his travelling companion come across a strange entity whom they dub The Impartial Hand.
Enjoy the story. And afterwards get yourself over to The Galloway Raiders if you want to find out more about Crockett and his work. Meanwhile, we’ll leave you with this quote from the story: We were gentlemen of Scotland travelling for our pleasure. This we stuck to wherever we went, and to our profit. For the memory of the Auld Alliance is not yet dead in French hearts, and at least anything is better than to proclaim oneself English. A case of back to the future, perhaps? It’s trick or treat time here on McStorytellers. We’re foregoing the trick for the treat. It comes in the form of a ghost story from one of the best, and sadly most neglected, writers Scotland has produced.
S. R. Crockett did history, action, adventure and romance. As you’ll find out in A Cry Across the Black Water, he also did spooky. And he set this tale in one of the spookiest places in the land, the Black Water of the Dee in his beloved Galloway. Enjoy – and shiver! It’s time for the final instalment of S. R. Crockett’s exciting Peninsular War adventure, Peter the Renegade.
