In the Wednesday McSerial slot, we’re delighted to present the fourth of our five excerpts from J. M. Barrie’s An Edinburgh Eleven, a collection of pencil portraits of prominent people in Edinburgh when he was a student.

The excerpt this week is a highly illuminating homage to Robert Louis Stevenson, in which Barrie implores the famous author to return to his retreat in Bournemouth (where the photograph was taken) and produce his greatest work yet; to write the big book.

This week it’s the turn of the famous Scottish geologist and explorer, Joseph Thomson, who graduated at Edinburgh University shortly before Barrie did.

In the Wednesday McSerial slot, we’re delighted to present the second of our five excerpts from J. M. Barrie’s An Edinburgh Eleven, a collection of pencil portraits of prominent people in Edinburgh when he was a student.

The portrait today is that of Professor David Masson, Professor of Rhetoric and English Literature at Edinburgh University in 1884, whom Barrie described as a true man of letters in keeping with Masson’s own definition of the term.

“Uncrowned King Of Scotland”

Because he’s away doing exams, young Jack MacRoary has had to interrupt his latest McSerial, but he’ll be back in a few weeks’ time with more Big Brexit Blethers.

In Jack’s place, we have another treat lined up for you for the next handful of Wednesdays. Starting today, courtesy of publishing guru Cally Phillips, we’ll be McSerialising excerpts from J. M. Barrie’s An Edinburgh Eleven, which Barrie described as pencil portraits of prominent people in Edinburgh when he was a student.

His portrait today is that of Lord Rosebery, who really was labelled Uncrowned King of Scotland at one time. Jings, crivens, help ma Boab! How Scottish politics have changed since the late nineteenth century! Definitely worth a read.
