Isn’t it wonderful that there are so many opportunities to make bad decisions?
– Van Saunders
In 1967, Rowan Daniels was invited to join his colleague in a peace march led by Martin Luther King, Jr. He declined, having made plans to purchase a washing machine at Sears & Roebuck.
In 1969, Rowan was asked by his cousin to come with him to a rock concert in upstate New York. He passed on the offer because he had an appointment to have his teeth cleaned. His cousin returned from the event 5 days later.
In 1975, Rowan had two tickets for the premier of a late Saturday night comedy show on NBC, but he gave them away to his neighbors. He did not want to miss the latest episode of Matt Helm.
In early 1977, Rowan had a chance to see Elvis Presley, but the date of the performance conflicted with his bowling night. So he figured he’d wait until the following year when the King was scheduled to appear again.
In 1980, Rowan chose not to attend the Olympics in Lake Placid because he only had tickets to a single event . . . the hockey semi-final game. He was certain the Russian team would dominate the contests and win the gold.
In 1986, Rowan turned down an opportunity to go on a blind date with another couple. His friend later married the woman he was to be partnered with. Rowan was completely smitten by the bride at the wedding.
In 1996, Rowan rejected an offer by two Stanford University students to invest in their new website search engine. Instead, he chose to invest his savings in a Day Trading scheme.
In 1999, Rowan refused a golden parachute retirement offer from his employer because he felt it wasn’t large enough. He planned to hold out for a second offer, but a few months later the company declared bankruptcy.
In 2001, Rowan accepted an invitation from his brother-in-law to meet him in his office at 8 AM on the 87th floor of the World Trade Center’s Tower One . . .
