James was at the bar reading Dostoevsky again. For James that meant being Dostoevsky.
“Game of pool Jim?” I asked from the jukebox.
He lays his book down on the bar (at least there was no book-mark) and moseyed on across to the table. Picking up the white ball he studies it for a moment and without taking his eyes from the ball he states, “Pool can be considered a peasant’s sport you know?”
“Aye?”
“Aye.”
“Wantin tae play this peasant for a drink then?”
He places the white ball in the D and tells me to set them up then.
Six games to nil he beat me and then I was skint. Remembering an engagement I had just that moment thought up, I bade cheerio and shuffled out the door.
Avoiding the puddles, my feet were still soaked within minutes of setting out from the pub. Penniless and with wet socks, I had never felt more like a peasant than on that walk home.
